Shake and Howdie!

Hello dear g'Earlfriends, including all the new friends we met last month in the wilds of Oregon, Minnesota, New York, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. Phew!

We are currently retreating on the coast of Oregon, near Cannon Beach drinking way too much coffee and writing songs and are about to head out on the road again this time with Laura Cortese on bass (West Coast, Florida, Nashville and Europe this time...see dates on the right...) First we thought we'd send a little love and some news. Thanks for checking in and hope to see you at a show soon.

XO,  Abby

Tour Report
We we honored to tour this August with Bryn Davies, who was fresh off Patty Griffin's tour bus. We gave her the full initiation rites of a double header on her first show - Kenmore Concert outside of Seattle where we closed out a great summer concert series on the big lawn and then straight to the Tractor Tavern for a late night show.  Oh how we love the Tractor Tavern!

Then we were onto the Northwest String Summit, a big Yonder Mountain Stringband family reunion with strange jellyfish balloons on pulleys suspended over an audience ocean of glowsticks and mysteriously glowing gnomes. There were bumper stickers on the golf carts that said "Glowsticks Kill Peacocks" and I thought that was a band name until I saw the actual peacocks roosting in the trees. Bryn rocked out on a bass solo switcheroo thingy with Ben Kaufmann. We were so proud.  We raise our collective glowstick to you Bryn!

Thanks to Kristin's mom's networking skills we had a great show in Bend, Oregon at the Les Schwab Amphitheater. Bend is now one of our new favorite "homes away from homes."

At the Minnesota State Fair, we learned all about the Butter Princesses. There are 12 princesses chosen, one for each day of the fair. (It's one of the largest state fair in the country!). Then each day, one princess gets her likeness carved out of a 90 pound block of butter. This happens live in a refrigerated viewing room. Fantastico. Also worthy of mention was the food-on-a-stick phenomenon: cheese curds-on-a-stick, fried pickle-on-a-stick, fried brownie-on-a-stick, spaghetti-on-a-stick, hot dish-on-a-stick, and, of course spam-on-a-stick.  Now that  booth was manned by our g'earlfriend, Amy Peterson.  And, of honorary mention, from Rayna’s culinary report, was, in her own words, "The freaking best corndog of my life!"

Abby says she wants her bust in butter next year. That's weird.

Then we were on to Pennsylvania for some quality time with our adopted family the Asplundhs. Much love and thanks for the chocolate, the coffee, the rides, the beds, the spiritual guidance, the party, the yoga... and oh yeah, the private festival on the lawn! Kurt Asplundh is the PRESIDENT of the Steam Powered Preservation Society and now the president of the Council of Earl AKA our own personal myspace slave.

On to the Moedown in Turin, New York. We love jamband festivals!! Please have us back. Another sea of glowsticks and good vibes and we got to see the amazing band Moe for the first time and actually got to sit in and sing harmony on the song The Weight! Check out our myspace where there is a link to the sound file of the event.

Continuing on to Michigan where we joined up again with the ravishing Miss Laura Cortese and passed her the bass baton in the never ending Uncle Earl bass race.

Ok, and this is where all the trouble began.......

See, for the very first time we decided not to rent a commercial van but save money instead and throw some cash to our friends The Mammals to borrow their van. They have a wonderful Sprinter van, really... it just didn't didn't like US so much. We had brake failure in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, canceled one show in Kentucky (sorry to Woodsongs radio hour!), overheated in Knoxville, replaced a thermostat in Bristol, got a fuel leak on the way to DC, and learned way too much about de-greasing an engine. The highlight was the morning we were racing to play a show at the Birchmere and stopped at our fourth Autozone of the trip, this time to buy particle masks which we stuffed with kleenex to keep the diesel fumes out of our lungs. Pulling into the Birchmere parking lot we noticed the Autozone on the corner of the lot. Our perspective has been permanently altered……or maybe it’s just the fumes.

Meanwhile, we did manage to make it to Owensboro, Kentucky for a fundraiser for the International Bluegrass Music Museum (check it out when in Owensboro!). And to the very fun Rhythm n Roots Festival in Bristol, Tennessee. Which leads to some exciting news...

Remember Mary Lucey who played bass with us all last winter? Well, Kristin and KC got to sing some pretty harmonies with her at a midnight jam in Bristol, Tennessee on her DUE DATE.  That's how hard those Biscuit Burners work, yes. Right up to the edge. But gratefully yes, she and Billy Cardine made it home in time to have a baby boy named Bodie on September 25th.

Music Video Report......

Kristin's been working hard with Cutter the editor on the video. She's driven back and forth from New York to DC a few times on her time off.....give her a pat on the back next time you see her (and some gas money!)

Rayna’s News

Nov. 30  Noon show with Jeff Keith at the Niles Gallery at University of Kentucky

Abigail’s news

Abigail is just back from a trip to China. She had a quartet of pipa, guzheng, zhongruan and banjo for shows at The Beijing MIDI Jazz Fest, Ambassador Randt’s Residence and Yugong Yishan. Big shout out again to all the Beijing pals, most especially jon Campbell (www.ygtwo.com). For pics and stories, videos and music, www.abigailwashburn.com
And, The Sparrow Quartet (Bela Fleck, Casey Driessen and Ben Sollee) is still in the studio between tours finishing an album to be released in spring of ’08. We’ll keep you posted.

December 1 Abigail and Bela will be performing in support of the Old Town School of Music in Chicago, www.oldtownschool.org for more info.

KC’s news

KC continues the uphill battle to keep her downtown Lyons, Colorado 1910 shotgun Victorian standing.   Many new projects have been started and of course it’s bulb planting season and wood splitting time.  She recently got to perform a reunion show with her country band, The Dangerfields with Jeff Hamer. She is also currently obsessed with Deadwood and can only talk to people who are willing to discuss the show. We think it's because of this show that she has developed a new vernacular which many find quite offensive.

Happy Fall everyone!

Love,
KC, Kristin, Abby, & Rayna
